The land was absolutely stunning, making Cash wonder why he hadn’t spent more time out there. The sky was huge above them, framed by the massive rock formations that he mostly only knew at a distance. The lakes they passed were so serene they were practically magical.

It didn’t hurt that he was following just behind or next to Shiloh, depending on the trail's width at the time. He loved watching her face change as she talked about various aspects of life. She was smiling with shining eyes one moment, and then she might be frowning and chewing her lip the next. Her body moved with ease and grace along the trail, her feet easily navigating as though she’d done this a hundred times. Cash didn’t know why such little details were so enchanting, but he did know he could stand just behind her and stare at the curve of her neck as she studied the map for hours.

“Okay,” Shiloh said with a sigh of anticipation as she held up the old piece of paper once again. “It looks like we should be reaching Mistymoon Lake before nightfall. It looked amazing in all the pictures I looked up, and there should be some good camping spots there. I wasn’t thinking about this being an overnight trip, but it looks like that’s where we’re at for the moment. What do you think?”

Cash felt his whole body react when she mentioned spending the night. He’d known it was a possibility, considering that this was a long trail, but just to hear those words coming from her mouth made every cell he had surge toward her. Shiloh presented such a conundrum for him. She’d said she didn’t want to be with him, yet he noticed her subtle glances and the softness in her smile. They were spending so much time together, and he felt his wolf only growing more and more attached. Cash knew that simply pitching camp for the night didn’t mean anything was going to happen, yet he longed to wrap his arm around her at a lakeside campfire and claim her body again.

His thoughts were distracted by a group of men heading in their direction on the trail, coming down toward them. “I think we have company.”

Shiloh stepped aside to make room for the oncoming traffic, but she stiffened as they approached.

Cash felt the same reaction happening to him. There were four men, and none of them looked like typical hikers. They wore pull-on boots or tennis shoes instead of hiking boots, and their backpacks looked like school bags picked up at a discount store. This looked more like a group of people he’d chase out of a back alley somewhere in town.

He didn’t recognize three of them, but one of them was all too familiar. It was the slim man with the black baseball cap and the crossbow tattoo on his arm, the same one he’d talked to about camping in the wrong spot. Cash stepped forward to put himself between the newcomers and Shiloh.
